GLEN BURNIE, MD — A work break turned into a life-changing moment for Roderick Doughty, a construction traffic manager from Glen Burnie, who won a $50,000 top prize with a FAST PLAY ticket.
The win occurred in the Brandywine area, where Doughty, a loyal lottery player, stopped by Baden Grocery during a break. Intending to buy scratch-offs, he accidentally purchased two $5 FAST PLAY Double Win tickets. The first ticket was a dud, but the second carried the $50,000 top prize.
Doughty, who remained calm and continued his workday in a state of shock, later shared the exciting news with his family. He plans to use the winnings for a down payment on a house and to share some with his extended family.
Baden Grocery, the retailer that sold the winning ticket, will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery for the sale. The Double Win game, launched in July 2023, continues to offer prizes ranging from $5 to $50,000. Doughty is the fourth person to claim a top prize in this game.

- Manhattan Man Charged with Defrauding Elderly Relative of Bronx Home
BRONX, NY — Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark has announced the indictment of a Manhattan man, Frank Blackshear, on charges including Grand Larceny and Falsifying Business Records. Blackshear is accused of deceitfully taking ownership of his wife’s grandfather's home while the elderly man was residing in a nursing home.
The 89-year-old victim, Milton Roberts, who is now 91, was placed in Kings Harbor MultiCare Facility in August 2022 due to health issues. During his stay there, Blackshear allegedly manipulated legal documents to transfer ownership of Roberts' home at 331 Taylor Avenue in the Soundview section of the Bronx, valued at $698,000, to himself under the guise of the Blackshear Living Trust.
District Attorney Clark expressed her disdain for the actions, noting Blackshear’s exploitation of a vulnerable family member. "The defendant allegedly preyed upon a vulnerable member of our community... This selfish and cruel act will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law," she stated.
Blackshear was arraigned before Bronx Supreme Court Justice Jeffrey Zimmerman and faces charges including second-degree Grand Larceny and first-degree Offering a False Instrument for Filing. Despite the serious nature of the allegations, he was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled to return to court on October 15, 2024.
- Burtonsville Retiree Wins $50,000 in Maryland Lottery, Clears Debt
BURTONSVILLE, MD — A retired school administrator from Burtonsville has struck it lucky with a $50,000 top prize from the Joker’s Wild scratch-off lottery ticket. Having retired a few years ago, she had taken up part-time work to supplement her retirement income and carefully managed her finances, including setting aside a small weekly budget for her favorite lottery scratch-offs.
Her routine purchase at the Giant store on 12028 Cherry Hill Road in Silver Spring led to the surprising win. The winner bought the ticket and only remembered to check it hours later while at work. Using the Maryland Lottery app, she scanned the QR code and received a message to visit a retailer. After scratching off the entire ticket, she discovered her match and the $50,000 prize.
The winnings will significantly ease her financial planning, allowing her to pay off debts and focus on savings and charitable contributions. She expressed plans to travel to Europe and visit her adopted family in Kenya. Besides her lottery hobby, she volunteers at her local church and crafts gifts.
The store that sold the winning ticket will receive a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery. Despite this win, the Joker’s Wild game still offers six remaining top prizes and over 830,000 smaller prizes, ranging from $5 to $5,000, since its release on July 22.
